On the way to sustainable cheese
At Veenmeester we focus on cheese that is as sustainable as possible. By continuously innovating, we work towards cheese that is always a little better. For nature, for animals and for people. Because in the meantime we keep our cheese simply masterful in terms of taste and texture. That's what it's all about in the end.
For that sustainable cheese you have to be socially responsible. This means that we produce our cheese in an environmentally friendly factory in a green environment. Always based on meadow milk and sometimes even completely circular dairy. This way we make cheeses that make you feel good.
At least pasture milk
We use at least pasture milk for all our cheeses. This means that all our farmers' animals have space to graze outside for at least 120 days a year, 6 hours a day (or more). In this way we preserve the landscape, stimulate biodiversity and increase animal welfare.
And it's nutritious too. Our animals have access to a varied diet of fresh grass and herbs. As a result, cheese from pasture milk generally has more healthy fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants than cheese from animals that are kept indoors all day. That is also responsible enjoyment.
Circular dairy
With Veenmeester Weldaad we now also make cheese from circular dairy. From milk from 100% grass-fed cows that lead a loving life on the Eytemaheert nature farm where nitrogen-neutral agriculture is being researched in collaboration with the University of Wageningen. Without pesticides, fertilizers and waste.
All this to achieve a minimal effect on the climate and maximum taste. Cheese as it was meant to be.
To support this goal on all sides, the packaging we make for this cheese is also put together as sustainably as possible. For example, we use a natural crust and a label that you can grow into a flower field for bees and butterflies.
Factory in Oosterwolde
Together you are stronger. That is why our cheese factory is located at the Ecomunity Park in Oosterwolde. This is an ecological industrial estate, half of which consists of nature and where the other half is made up of innovative companies that all want the best for our planet.
We share knowledge and ideas at the Ecomunity Park. This keeps us on our toes and helps us discover new possibilities, for example to make the production process even more sustainable. In this way we contribute increasingly to a healthier world. Every day again.
Co2 reduction certificate
After all, raw materials have to go from the farm to the factory. And our cheese has to go from the factory back to the store. To offset the emissions from that transport, we invest in certified CO2 offset projects from the World Resources Institute.
This already gave us a nice certificate in 2022. But more importantly: we save more than 4,200 kg of extra CO2 in the air every year.
Mission: co2 neutral cheese in 2034
We have already come a long way with our cheeses. But it can always be better. And it must also be better given the current circumstances. That is why we have set ourselves the goal of making completely climate-neutral cheese by 2034. With at least as much absorption as CO2 emissions.
We believe that as a human being you should be able to enjoy a beautiful natural product without leaving a footprint on that same nature. And we are firmly convinced that this is actually possible.
